For travellers in north-east Cambodia, the roads to Laos, Ratanakiri and Mondolkiri all converge at Kratié, a small town on the banks of the Mekong, where you usually spend just one night because you don’t know what the region has to offer.
However, just a short distance from Kratie, in the middle of the Mekong, there is another Cambodia, a Cambodia barely touched by modern civilisation.
Surrounded by fine sandy beaches for 6 months of the year, constantly refreshed by the river breeze, the island of Koh Trong is almost the ideal Cambodia, the one sought in vain by many travellers disappointed by the bad modernism now affecting the land of smiles.
No cars but carts, smiling peasants, chiselled fishermen and a rich land that the men have turned into an orchard, ‘Koh del Trong bat Cheunchien’, ‘the island where the king lost his ring’ which has been shortened to ‘Koh Trong’, the royal island, is a little paradise.
